A Prayer For You

I am no longer my own, but yours. Put me to what you will, place me with whom you will. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be put to work for you or set aside for you, praised for you or criticized for you. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and fully surrender all things to your hope and service. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, you are mine, and I am yours. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth let it be made also in heaven.

Amen.*

SCRUB RIDGE

Junior Stapleton was in the store this week and he was in trouble. It seems on Monday, he called off work saying he had a flat tire and no spare. He had to wait for someone to take him to town to get a spare, he told his boss. Of course that was not true he was actually rabbit hunting that day. But of all things on his way to work on Tuesday he had a real flat tire and he had to come up with another lie to cover the truth, because he had used the flat tire story when he didn't have a flat tire. Brody Bundy said, "That is Murphy's Law for sure." Of course dear reader Murphy's Law states that "If anything can go wrong, it probably will go wrong."

So the conversation got on to other Murphy like laws like: "The chance of bread falling with buttered side down is directly proportional to the cost of the carpet." "Technology is dominated by those who manage what they do not understand." "Light travels faster than sound and that is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak." "Tell a man there is 300 billion stars in the sky and he will believe you, but if you tell him a bench has wet paint on it, he'll have to touch it just to be sure." "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat all day drinking soda and loafing." "Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong." Well those are all sort of Murphy's Law and they tell us about how hard life is and how often things can go wrong. In fact the odds of something going wrong everyday are almost a certainty. Hence we have to learn to deal with Murphy's Law. Paul tells us how in Romans 5. Paul says we boast of our troubles because they produce endurance and endurance brings God's approval. God's approval creates hope. "This hope does not disappoint us for God has poured out his love into our hearts by means of the Holy Spirit, who is God's gift to us." (Romans 5.5) Well, carry on and conduct your own noble battle against Murphy's Laws with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Be seeing you.
Rev. I.B. Frank
